What a Warehouse Safety Audit Covers

A warehouse safety audit examines conditions that can lead to injuries, product or equipment damage, and interrupted operations. Warehouse Cubed documents observed concerns and organizes findings for prompt action or longer-term planning.

  • Racking and storage: We look for damaged uprights, beams, braces, anchors, connectors, safety locks, decking, load signs, and storage practices that may affect rack stability. Where applicable to the rack type, ANSI/RMI MH16.1 provides a technical reference for the design, testing, and use of industrial steel storage racks. A dedicated pallet rack inspection can provide a more focused review.
  • Dock operations: The review may include dock edges, levelers, plates, doors, lighting, trailer-securing practices, barriers, pedestrian access, and lift-truck traffic.
  • Egress and high-pile storage: We check whether designated aisles and exits are visible and unobstructed, then note storage-height, sprinkler-clearance, flue-space, signage, and fire-protection concerns that require follow-up with the appropriate professional or local authority.
  • Equipment interaction and guarding: We review areas where lift trucks, conveyors, machinery, storage systems, and employees share space. Warehouse safety guards include barriers, guardrails, bollards, rack protection, and machine guards used to separate people or equipment from exposed hazards.

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.176 addresses safe clearances for mechanical handling, clear and appropriately marked permanent aisles, stable material storage, and orderly storage areas. Requirements vary by facility and jurisdiction, so findings should also be checked against manufacturer instructions and applicable fire, building, and workplace-safety rules. Use our warehouse safety audit checklist to prepare for an on-site review.

Our Step-by-Step Safety Process

1. Hazard Identification & Analysis

We review your facility to pinpoint potential risks—such as unprotected mezzanines, congested aisles, and inadequate barrier systems.

2. Customized Safety Plan

After the on-site review, Warehouse Cubed organizes findings by location, condition, exposure, and recommended action. The report uses clear priorities:

a. Repair now: Conditions that call for prompt action, which may include unloading, isolating, or guarding an affected area until the issue is corrected.

b. Monitor: Lower-priority conditions that should be documented and checked again on a defined schedule or after another impact.

c. Plan replacement: Aging, repeatedly damaged, or unsuitable components that should be included in an upcoming capital or maintenance plan.

3. Implementation & Setup

Our team assists with the installation or setup of safety measures, ensuring minimal disruption to your daily operations.

4. Installation & Setup

Skilled technicians handle placement, anchoring, and final checks to ensure everything aligns with the design.

5. Training & Ongoing Support

We provide resources and best practices to keep your staff informed and prepared, alongside guidance on maintaining compliance as your facility evolves.

How Often Should a Warehouse Safety Audit Happen?

Most facilities should schedule a formal warehouse safety audit at least annually, with more frequent internal inspections based on traffic, equipment use, incident history, and area-specific risks. OSHA does not establish this annual schedule as a universal requirement for every general-industry warehouse.

Conduct an additional warehouse safety inspection after a rack or forklift impact, injury, near miss, layout change, equipment installation, or storage reconfiguration. Busy docks, frequently struck rack rows, pedestrian crossings, and other higher-exposure areas may need weekly or monthly checks. Employees should report damage immediately.

Inspection frequency should reflect equipment-manufacturer instructions, insurer guidance, and any applicable OSHA, fire-code, or local requirements. Keep dated records of findings, corrective work, and follow-up inspections so recurring problems are easier to identify.
