Can you phase a project so we start with layout/racking and add automation later?
Quick Answer
Yes. Warehouse Cubed can phase your project by first completing a space-saving warehouse layout and installing the right pallet racking system, then adding conveyors, AS/RS, or other automation when you are ready. We design the initial infrastructure with future automation in mind, so the later upgrade is fast, budget-friendly, and minimally disruptive.
Detailed Answer
For this two-phase example, in Phase 1, our Layout & Design team creates a CAD model that maps traffic flow, pick zones, and safety aisles, then installs pallet racking systems, mezzanines, or modular in-plant offices to maximize storage density and meet code. All wiring, rack clearances, and load capacities are engineered up front to support Phase 2 automation.
When your budget or order volume calls for it, we move to Phase 2 without tearing out what you already paid for. Our material handling systems integration experts bolt in conveyor systems, goods-to-person robotics, or automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS) that plug directly into the racking installed earlier. Because power drops, network cabling, and WMS interfaces were preplanned, downtime is minimal and you avoid costly rework.
This phased approach lowers capital risk, lets you train staff in stages, and delivers quick wins in space utilization and safety before you invest in full warehouse automation solutions. Many e-commerce fulfillment centers, manufacturers, and 3PLs have used this strategy to scale smoothly while keeping operations running and customers happy.
