Do I need end-of-row protection on every aisle of my warehouse?

Quick Answer

Yes—unless you can prove an aisle end faces no realistic impact risk, installing end-of-row guards is considered best practice and is often required by local building codes, rack manufacturers, or insurance carriers. Protecting every aisle dramatically reduces costly rack damage, downtime, and safety incidents caused by forklifts.

Detailed Answer

Forklifts hit rack ends more than any other part of a storage system. OSHA’s General Duty Clause and ANSI/RMI MH16.1 place responsibility on employers to keep racks safe, and most rack manufacturers void a warranty if uprights are unprotected. For that reason, end-of-row protection is recommended on every aisle where powered industrial trucks operate, especially high-traffic pick tunnels and cross-aisles—because a single upright failure can trigger a costly domino collapse.

The only exceptions are rows that face a wall or restricted pedestrian zone with no vehicle access. Even then, safety auditors still advise installing inexpensive post protectors because operators and pallet jacks can stray off course. During a Warehouse Cubed warehouse safety audit, our engineers map traffic patterns, identify high-risk rack ends, and specify the right guard style (bolt-on steel wraps, low-profile rack armor, or heavy-duty guardrail systems) to meet ANSI, NFPA, and local code requirements.

Adding universal end-of-aisle guards typically pays for itself after preventing just one impact repair. Clients who combined guards with our pallet rack repair kits and routine rack inspections have reported fewer damage claims and unplanned shutdowns. If you’re unsure what your facility needs, request a consult from our warehouse optimization team; we’ll design, supply, and install end-of-row protection that keeps your pallet racking systems, inventory, and people safe while supporting future warehouse automation solutions.
