How Much Weight Can a Pallet Rack Hold?

Quick Answer

There is no single weight limit for every pallet rack. Capacity depends on upright gauge, beam length, connections, beam height, load placement, and how the full system is set up. Use the manufacturer’s chart for the exact rack parts. If that information is missing, ask a qualified professional to review the system.

Detailed Answer

Two ratings must be checked before loading pallet rack:

  • Beam capacity: The approved load for a pair of beams at one level
  • Frame capacity: The total approved load carried by the upright frames

Both ratings apply. A beam pair may hold its planned load, while the frames cannot support the combined weight from every level.

Beam length matters because longer beams act differently under load than shorter beams. Upright gauge is important, but it does not set capacity by itself. Column shape, bracing, frame depth, connections, and beam heights also affect the rating. The chart may require the weight to be spread across the beams in a certain way.

To calculate your planned load, add the product, pallet, and container weight at each position. Then total the weight for every beam level. This calculation gives you the load demand, while the approved pallet rack capacity still comes from the manufacturer or engineer.

Check the drawings, load plaque, and manufacturer’s chart before changing loads or beam heights. Request an engineering review if records are missing, parts cannot be identified, the rack is damaged, or the layout has changed.
